Jack Sparrow x My Beauty Diary: the Black Pearl Mask Review | Blogmas Day 15

Even pirates like to pamper their skin from time to time. And that's why Jack Sparrow and My Beauty Diary collaborated to bring you the Black Pearl sheet mask! Now you too can get the ghostly glow a la the crew of the Black Pearl.

In all seriousness this mask has nothing to do with Pirates of the Caribbean but my late night blogging self can't resist these cheesy dad jokes (speaking of dad jokes, have you seen the "Dad does my voice over" video? I die.) This is the second mask I'm reviewing as part of the Asian Beauty subreddit mask club. If you're curious about my thoughts on last week's mask, you can read all about it here.

Spoiler: I liked this week's mask a whole lot more!

I bought a box of 10 from Target for $12.99 (so $1.30/ mask) and they're also available for $13.00 via Amazon. Alternatively you can also buy them individually.

At Beautibi they're $1.75 per mask or $14.00 for a box of 11. You can get $5 off your first purchase through the use of my referral link 😉

At Beautius they're $2.49 each and at the moment they're having a 10% off sale.

At Beauteque they're $1.99 per mask and at the moment they're having a 40% off flash sale! Once that sale is over, they will still have a 20% off sale going on.

I also picked up a limited edition "King of Cats" version of this mask from Beautius during their Black Friday sale. The mask is exactly the same but the outer packaging has a pug on it. And that made it worth the extra $1.50 for me 😍🐶

Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Laminaria Digitata Extract, Hydrolyzed Yeast Protein, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Citric Acid, Hydrolyzed Pearl, Tabebuia Impetiginosa Bark Extract, Polysorbate 20, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Codium Tomentosum Extract, Lecithin, Polysorbate 80, Acer Saccharum (Sugar Maple) Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Extract, Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Flower Extract, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract, Glyceryl, Glucoside, Polyglutamic Acid, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Xanthan Gum, Carbomer, Fragrance, Polyglycerin-3, Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxide, Arbutin, Glycosphingolipids, Tocopheryl Acetate

There are a few varieties of this mask floating around and it seems that the ingredient lists vary a little. The one I'm using has a manufacturing date of 10/14/2016 so I'm going to assume this is the most recent formulation.

CosDNA breakdown of the ingredients can be found here.

My Beauty Diary waxes on about the benefits of black pearl claiming it to be rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.

Personally I view black pearl as one of those "trendy" ingredients. Aka it's trendy but there isn't enough substantial research supporting its skin benefits for me to believe in it. Of course that doesn't mean I'm not willing to try it out! For this mask, I'm not too interested in the black pearl but I am impressed by the inclusion of aloe, sodium hyaluronate, pineapple extract, cucumber extract, and licorice extract-- all of which are supposed to soothe and hydrate the skin.

To keep it short, the mask's tagline is "optimal whitening, brightening, and moisturizing!" According to the box it's made for normal skin types and is "especially recommended for skin lacking fairness, dull, or tired skin."

If I look half asleep with wacky hair in these's because I was half half asleep with bed head.

Mask Material
First off this mask came with one of those fancy plastic protector thingamabobs. I'm not sure what the exact purpose of the protector is but I do like that it makes it a lot easier to unfold the mask.

According to the box the mask material is Cosphingo X Aquarod...which I think is the same thing as Tencel. It looks and feels like a Tencel sheet mask so even if it isn't exactly the same thing, it's very similar. The material was very soft and thin, but not in a cheap way. It soaked up the essence realllly nicely.

The fit was really good! The eye holes were large enough and far enough apart, the area around the nose layed nice and smooth, and the mouth hole wasn't gaping.

This mask comes with so. much. essence. It contains 23 mL of essence and in comparison the Tonymoly sheet masks I reviewed yesterday have 18 mL and the I'm Real mask I reviewed last week has 21 mL. It's pretty liquidy but has some viscosity to it. The consistency kind of reminded me of May Coop's Raw Sauce.

Scent isn't something I really notice with most sheet masks but this one had a relatively strong, rosey scent. And I could smell it for at least the first 10 minutes of wearing it. After that I'm not sure if I simply got used to it or if it dissipated. I enjoy rose scents but usually my eyes do not (they start burning and/or tearing). Thankfully I didn't have any issues with this one!

So after putting the mask one I literally spent 10 minutes trying to get a halfway decent mask selfie. Then I slapped on a silicone cover and left the mask on for another 45 minutes since I kinda forgot I was wearing it. When I took it off it still wasn't completely dried! The essence left my skin feeling baby butt levels of soft. There was some mild stickiness at first but it was gone with a half an hour.

I wanna say that my skin was brightened after wearing this...but that may just be wishful thinking. But really I'm convinced I looked a bit glowy after wearing this mask! The mild redness on my forehead is definitely less.

Morning After?
So I actually wore this mask in the morning so I can't say what happens overnight, but I can say what happened throughout the day.

I skipped out on putting a proper moisturizer after the mask and instead went with Dr. Jart's ceramidin serum and then sunscreen. Usually if I were to follow this routine I would get some midday dryness but thanks to this mask I didn't! So the mask's hydrating effects definitely lasted all day long.

And the glowiness that I may or may not have imagined? It totally lasted all day! (Also for disclosure's sake I should point out that I put some lip gloss on before taking this last photo.)

Bottom line
I really, really liked this mask and I'm glad I purchased a box! Now I want to try out more of the My Beauty Diary masks as they have so many different flavors. I also kinda want more of the King of Cats ones because I'm a fool who falls for adorable packaging🙈
