homemade oreo zeppoles

Oreos are delicious as is...but oreo zeppoles??? AMAZING! Whether it be at the Jersey shore or at an upscale Italian restaurant in NYC (hello Lavo), oreo zeppoles, or rather fried oreos, are heavenly. Last week, my friend and I decided to make some at home! Recipe + more pics under the break :)

Finished product! They don't look as picture perfect as the professionals' but they were still scrumptious :)
Served with a vanilla milkshake for dipping, obviously

Ingredients// Tools:

  • 10 oreos
  • 1 cup bisquick pancake mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Pan to deep fry the oreos
  • Spatula
  • Spoon
  • Plate with paper towels to soak extra oil
Note: We basically used the recipe on the pancake mix box and cut it in half. Even so, we still had a lot of left over pancake mix!

  1. Mix the egg, 1/2 cup milk, and pancake mix together. It's easier if you add the pancake mix gradually so it isn't as difficult to get rid of clumps.
  2. Turn the stove on LOW and let the oil boil. MAKE SURE TO PUT A LID ON IT-- just to be safe! We didn't realize our flame wasn't low enough and the oil splattered everywhere! We put enough oil in the pan that half the oreo would sit in it. (See 4th photo)
  3. After the oil is hot dip, drop the oreo into the pancake batter. This is the difficult part, getting the pancake mix to stay on the oreo.
  4. Dip the covered oreo into the pancake. For your first try the oreo mix will probably fall off the oreo, but it's all good! As you go on, you get the hang of it.
  5. Flip the oreo over so the other side can cook.
  6. Once it's golden brown, remove with spatula! Voila!! Repeat!
  7. As time goes, the oreos cook faster and faster!

To make two vanilla milkshakes, blend 2 cups ice cream, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, & 3/4 cup milk. You'll probably have to shift it around with a spoon in the beginning because the ice cream will get stuck. Yay! Now you're all set with your delicious dessert/ snack/ in our case 11 PM dinner.
