Say Hello to Supergoop!'s New Powder Sunscreen

When Supergoop! reached out asking if I wanted to try out their new invincible setting powder SPF 45 sunscreen, of course I said yes. Because as a self-declared skincare addict, I pray at the altar of SPF. The post is sponsored by them but as always, all opinions are my own.

Even before I got into skincare, I was a religious sunscreen wearer. I honestly have to thank my dermatologist and prescription acne meds for forcing me to wear sunscreen on a daily basis as a teen. One thing I haven't been very good about? Reapplying my sunscreen. It's simply too much work to slather another layer on, especially if I happen to be wearing makeup. Fortunately, beauty brands are coming out with innovative ways for us to up our SPF game. There are sunscreen cushions, sunscreen oils, sunscreen mists, and now sunscreen powders!

In the winter when it's cloudy and I'm indoors most of the time, I honestly don't think reapplication is necessary. But in the summer when it's sunny and I'm sweating and spending a ton of time outdoors? Reapplication is a good idea.

Ingredients

In last week’s post, I briefly mentioned how difficult it is to avoid mica (most often sourced via child labor) in cosmetics. Unfortunately, so many powders heavily feature mica. Thankfully this Supergoop setting powder does not! It utilizes 24.5% zinc oxide so it’s suitable for those with sensitivities to chemical sunscreens.

You don’t really think of powders as moisturizing, but this one contains ceramide 3 and olive glycerate to help keep your skin supple. It also has silica to provide that silky-smooth finish feeling. Unfortunately, that means if you have a silica allergy/ sensitivity, it’s best to skip this powder.

Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 24.5% Inactive Ingredients: Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Silica, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Triethoxycaprylysilane, Nylon-6/12, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Olive Glycerides, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Ceramide 3. May Contain +/- Iron Oxides (CI 77492, 77491, 77499), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)

Sun Protection

Personally, I would not recommend using this is as your sole form of sun protection for a multitude of reasons. 1) You don’t know how much to apply to get sufficient protection. And 2) If you apply it very heavily in an attempt to get allll the protection, you’ll get cake face and run out of product quickly. Instead, I recommend applying your usual sunscreen in the morning and then using this as a way to “top off” your sunscreen throughout the day.

Shade Range

The powder comes with 4 different options—light, medium, dark, and translucent. The lightest shade isn’t super light and the darkest shade isn’t super dark BUT because they don’t have a significant amount of pigmentation, I think they’re easily workable for a range of skintones. Personally, my favorite shade is the translucent shade. On my skin tone, it doesn’t cause a white cast. I can also wear the medium shade.

If you live near a retailer that carries the product in stores, I recommend going in and getting a shade match.

Packaging

As you can see from the photos, the powder comes in tube form. It’s small enough to easily travel with and has a click-on cap so it won’t explode in your purse/ bag/ fanny pack, etc. While it might not spill outside of the cap, it can get a little bit messy *inside* the cap. There's a retractable plastic protector that keeps the brush closed. But it's not super stiff so sometimes it wiggles down if the product is shaken. Then the next time you go to use it, there's an excess of powder on the brush. It's not a big deal as the powder is visible on the brush. Usually, I'll tap it on my wrist to get rid of the excess and then use it as normal.

Personally, I like using the brush halfway up. I can use it all the way up but the application isn’t as controlled. The brush head is magnetically attached and easily removable. I've washed the brush head once so far and it held its shape well. It's reasonably soft and I haven't had any bristles breaking or falling out.

The powder itself is refillable! You can remove the bottom end which holds the powder and replace it with a refill that retails for $20.00. I’m glad that more brands are looking to be eco-conscious by providing refillable packaging. It’s much less wasteful!

Scent

There really isn’t any scent. It doesn’t contain essential oils or fragrance.

Flashback

As it is a silica-based powder, there is major flashback. I would not recommend wearing this to a nighttime event where there will be flash photography. Then again, why would you wear a SPF powder to a nighttime event anyways?

Application + Reapplication

The main reason why I've enjoyed this over the past month is because of how easy it is to use! For the longest time, I didn't bother reapplying sunscreen because of how long it takes and how much energy I must exert. Removing my makeup and reapplying sunscreen and then reapplying makeup is a no go in my book. But with this, I can just apply the powder on top of my makeup!

The powder removes some of my shine, especially around my nose. But it doesn't make my skin completely matte. Personally I like this because I think I look plastic with completely matte skin. Plus my skin is dehydrated so super mattifying products inevitably leads to dry patches. It also does a good job of subtly blurring my pores. Because it isn't super mattifying, it doesn't shrivel up around my acne scars (a major win.)

With the tinted shades, there is minimal coverage. If you accidentally wiped away your foundation in one spot, this will help blur that. But it has nowhere near enough coverage to cover freckles, spots, acne, etc.

Final Thoughts

Overall I really like the powder! It's easy to use and I like re-upping my sunscreen throughout the day without having to remove my makeup. It's travel-friendly and doesn't dry my skin out. If they came out with a wider shade range and made it so you could lock the retractable brush in place, it would be even better in my books!

This has already become a staple in my makeup bag and I'm sure it will continue to remain one through the summer 😎
