the IT accessory

coat: h&m, tank: zara, denim: free people, sandals: mel by melissa

That's right ladies and gentlemen, this season's IT accessory is... a book! And not those Kate Spade or Charlotte Le-Tan clutch things. I'm talking about the real deal, you know the thing composed of bound pages of paper filled with words. While I'm all about the digital age, there is something gratifying about flipping through the pages of a book.

The book of choosing is Language Shock: Understanding the Culture of Conversation. It was an assigned reading for my lower division linguistic anthropology class. The information is a bit obvious, but forms the basis for a good introduction to linguistic anthropology. It reads easily and you don't have to any sort of background in anthropology or linguistics to understand it.

Actually, I happen to like the class a lot more than I had expected to. It's fascinating dissecting the assumptions of gender, race, socioeconomic class, etc. we make from the way people communicate, beyond just their words. Some of our judgments seem like second nature and trivial but significantly impact various realms, such as the American education system. Did you know that from a period spanning from the reconstruction era to the 1970s, sign language was viewed as an inferior method of communication? By 1920, it was forbidden in 80% of schools for the deaf. And all this stemmed from a belligerent form of patriotism which feared and suppressed anything which was seen as a threat to a homogenized, or rather "united," nation. Apparently one language equals one nation.

Okay, now my nerdy rant is over.

Onto something relevant to this outfit, these white jeans and my white denim overalls have been on constant rotation. I guess I've embraced the white denim for warmer weather thing.

  2. That sounds like such an interesting in class. When I first read the name of the class, I thought "that's sounds miserable!" but once you explained it, it sounded very interesting! If only I have that coat, I could totally copy this cute outfit! :)

  3. Wow definitely an interesting read. I learned something new today. It's kinda silly to think that one language equals one nation as this nation was built on several languages.

Besides that you're definitely working the all white with the pops of color. I'm really digging the coat.

  4. The fact about the sign language was so interesting- I didn't know that!
I love reading books, not the digital versions of them, but the real books! I can read a whole book in one day if it really excites me, though lately I don't have that much time to read which makes me really sad! :/

  5. I actually considered studying cultural anthropology before applying at the art academy, and this book sounds really interesting. Strange that we never consider facts like this by ourselves.

I sure miss the times when I had enough time to read them. and those times must come back!

  9. i feel like with social media and all people are starting to forget the joy of reading a real book. had a chance to do that while i was away and it was really nice! i think i mentioned before but your class sounds really interesting. the one language one nation thing happened in china also, there were so many different dialects they felt the need to unite the country with just one (mandarin) but as a result some of the lesser spoken dialects are now getting lost which i think is a shame!

love the red white and blue theme here ;-)

  10. First off, I love your header! And you look fabulous in white as usual. I also love that you're reading an actual book. I much prefer the tangible form with pages over a tablet. I just started "The Road", but when I finish I might check out your pick. I don't know much about the subject matter, but it certainly sounds interesting!

  11. Wow, I learned my something new for the day then. Geez how times and opinions change right. And I am all for books, fiction or text. I hate ebooks and stuff, I much prefer the printed stuff. I imagine someday when I'm an old fart I'll have a stronger opinion on this. I'll be out on the streets with my ten dogs cussing those who walk pass with their Kindles and stuff bahahahaha!

  19. The color of your sandals + your blue coat looks so lovely together, especially with the white denim. And yes, I appreciate your nerdy rant, and now I actually want to pick the book up so I can read more about this!
