crop top + skirt + socks+ sunglasses: h&m, jacket + tattoos: urban outfitters, booties: zara, ring: asos, id bracelet: marc by marc jacobs, beanie: american apparel

Happy beginning of the week! The jacket was a little bit of an impulse buy. Cheetah print is really not my thing, but I'm a sucker for the military/ surplus trend-- so I took the jump. Not sure what this skirt has been doing hiding in my closet for the last month. It was one of those love at first sight kinda things, so needless to say, it will be worn more. Also, how badass is my (temporary) tattoo. They're giving them away when you make a purchase at urban outfitters. I have the maturity of a 14 year old boy... or Natalie Tran.

John Bender tribute

4.27.2013

blue top: american apparel, white skort: zara, plaid shirt: nautica men's, bag: cambridge satchel, aviators: ray-ban

Lo and behold-- the white zara piece of the season. I can't count the number of times I've seen this white skort make an appearance online. You would think that seeing this skirt, sorry, skort over and over again would make me sick of it. Negative, the opposite really. Every time I laid my eyes on it, my infatuation heightened. I finally took the jump into the relationship, and couldn't be happier. As the days go by, aka one week, my love grows. Soon, we'll get married and live happily ever after in our magical castle in a land far, far away. The end!

But seriously, this skort. For it's debut on the blog, I wanted to style it in a way I personally hadn't seen before. The most common look I've seen is all white, which I will definitely be embracing someday soon, but today I embraced a more 80s like look. Earlier on the blog, I did a whole spiel on how I can't get myself to purchase full price items-- but this is the exception. It's funny when I think about it. I could buy a skirt or dress for $30, $40, and not be too bothered. I wouldn't drive myself to maximize its wear and search for cheaper alternatives before I made the purchase. But once we hit $50, oh man. I mean, you're halfway to $100!! On the other hand, I've already worn this skirt twice in a week, and have like half a dozen other outfits planned in my head with it. I have a ton of skirts and clothes in general that I've purchased at more reasonable prices-- and they see the light of day maybe once or twice, or if even at all. Basically, the end of all of this is, I'm happy with this splurge. The John Bender tribute was meant to be in reference to the plaid, but I think this quote fits my sentiments. (spending moolah is as bad as I get #badassoverhere #watchout)

"Bein' bad feels pretty good, huh"

a team// red coat

4.25.2013

dress: free people (last worn here), red jacket + socks: h&m, shoes: converse

I am having a love affair with this ice cream sandwich red coat. Ever since I saw Kani wearing her yellow rain coat at MBFW, I wanted something similar in my closet ASAP. This little number was on sale at H&M, and thanks to their extra 50% off (which I believe is ongoing, I bought this on Tuesday)-- it cost me a little under $15! I'm naturally drawn to dark and muted colors so I think this will be an easy way to brighten up such outfits. Also a plus, the coat is perfect for the LA rain, or should I say mist. The super floppy hood protects me from the feeling of walking through a swamp.

navy dress: soft joie, open knit sweater: ck jeans, shoes: nine west, sunglasses: h&m

Some quick snaps while I went to go buy a new laptop charger from the apple store. It's a little ludicrous how much they cost-- close to $90?! Now that I am again fully equipped for blogging, I feel like I've really been neglecting it recently. Partly I guess cause life's just kinda got my down as of late. I stress out about getting things done, and stressing out does not lead to productivity in my case. Long to do lists are made and things are not checked off, and my whole mojo is just off. Sorry I've been such a downer lately, but the whole point of this little depressing rant was to say thank you! Whenever I've pointed out my less than pleasant mood, kind people respond with comforting words. So thanks for pulling me out of my slump little by little :)

walking billboard

4.16.2013

sweatshirt: vintage from my dad's closet, skirt: mango, shoes: h&m

Another grumpy day, but today let's blame it on the hormones this time. What's better for days when you feel like fatty magoo? A sweatshirt. Even if it's one that turns you into a walking billboard. I'll just say I'm going along with the whole sporty varsity trend. Then paired with my go to item-- a black skirt. While there are numerous articles on what wardrobe staples are, I think at the end of the day it's up to an individual. If I had to include one and only one item to this list, it would be a black skirt. They come in such a great variety of cuts and lengths and shapes. They're the easiest piece to style, even with a sweatshirt. My own closet shows a lot of love to black skirts, so on a day that I'm feeling under the weather (like today), it's the perfect no worry piece I reach for.

coachella-less weekend music

4.12.2013

Since everyone and their mom is off to Coachella this weekend, I thought I would post a weekend music playlist for lounging, shopping, studying, whatever. I'm going to be honest, as fun and awesome going to Coachella would be, I honestly have never heard of/ don't listen to 95% of the bands, including the headliners. Last year's festival, on the other hand, was my idea of perfection music wise. That being said, I guess it's more than just the music and the festival experience as a whole (but the music is a pretty big part of it?)

While making this, I realized how this was less of a playlist in the conventional sense and just a long list of songs I currently enjoy. But that could be better if the playlist is on loop for a while!

the real history behind hats

4.11.2013

shorts: free people, plaid shirt: nautica (stolen from dad), shirt: star wars, cap: yankees

I had a personal battle with myself (yes, I am a drama queen) as to whether I should upload this look or not. The photo in my dorm room, which is always currently very clustered isn't exactly the most scenic photo location. But then again... it could be worse. And does it really matter? I mean, this isn't a professional blog by any means so who really cares? But then again, having a standard for myself isn't a bad thing. Clearly in the end, I just posted it. Which you know, since you are looking at it on the internet. I mean, despite the circumstances I actually liked what I wore. This outfit is the culmination of waking up before 7AM and having the most awful hair day ever. To top things off, my first class was a 2 hours physics lab-- fun (actually it wasn't bad at all but 7am grouch monster me did not know that.) I was on the verge of caving and dressing like a bum, but then this was whipped out.

Back to the point of the post: the hat.

The hat, or in this case, the baseball cap-- so trendy, so current. But let's be real, the original purpose of the hat is not to be oh so cool, but to cover up your grimy, horrible hair. Okay, the second purpose, first being to defend your face from the sun. But think about it, why do you think people from colonial time wore monstrous headpieces, or bonnets? To cover up their dirty hair because the personal hygiene of the times sucked. Majorly. At least this is what I would like to believe to help me feel better about my hair situation. (I have since showered-- yay fresh hair!!)

I never thought I could wear the whole 90s badass with the plaid tied look, cause of my hips. But with these high waisted shorts, I tied it around my belly button instead of my hips and it solved that problem. It seems sort of obvious at this point, but I thought I would share it in case anyone out there was as clueless as me. This is becoming a text heavy post. Whoops. So on a parting note, the only article of clothing in this look not from the men's department is the shorts...

Since I am wearing a yankees cap, ya know NY, I thought I would throw in these Laduree shots from when I was there over break

I must admit, that I was not that impressed by Laduree. People rave on and on about it, but for the price it was just meh. It was good, but my taste buds just weren't blown away like I expected. Guess I'm just a cupcake girl, sorry (but not really) I can't keep up with the dessert trends. Also, the people working there made me feel so uncomfortable. They were so... uppity. Which isn't justifiable in any context, but I would say their customer base isn't solely based on super wealthy upperclass society type people. It's a tourist place. People of all sorts of backgrounds are going to be getting their macaroons, it wouldn't hurt to be slightly more welcoming customer service wise. Sorry for the mini rant but I had to get it out.

golden coast

4.09.2013

Enjoyed some ben & jerry's for free cone day on the beach before class today. I swear, it's like the universe is shoving sugar in my face (not that I'm complaining.) This weekend I went to go get a twix bar from the vending machine, I was given 5 since the machine just keep going and going #itsthelittlethings

I feel like an all black outfit isn't really golden coast-y, but more east coasty. Oh well. Guess I'm saying yes to the mixing of my two homes. The top is actually a split back tee, so wearing it with the dress was my excuse to not wear a tank top under it (I hate tank tops under shirts.)

fisherman beanie + sweater: american apparel, shorts: madewell

Man oh man, I feel like I haven't taken outfit photos in forever. In reality... it has been like one day short of a week. Since it's the beginning of a new quarter (yeahhh quarter system reppin), I'm trying to be a good student and keep up with work instead of cramming around exams. So this will translate to less time spent on the internet... hopefully.

As you can see, I went a little crazy with the b&w photo of flowers. I wish I could have some sort of skirt or shorts, or anything with it. Or years of watching project runway has gotten to my head...

Also, I promise I don't wear a beanie every single day! But I had partially blow dried my hair to run to class and was stuck with a... fluffy, wispy mess :(

shoes: sperry topsider bahamas, jeans: citizens of humanity avedon slick, denim shirt: forever 21, jacket: zara, bracelets: bloomingdale's + bcbgeneration, beanie: american apparel fisherman

Having my photo taken is one of my many weaknesses (obviously in the grand scheme of life, it's really no big deal.) As a child, about 50% of the time I was not normally smiling in photos. As you can see, this is something that has not changed. Sooo, you're a person whose awkwardness gets exemplified 10x by the camera, having a blog of photos of yourself seems like a reallly good idea (sense the sarcasm.) So instead of the usual trying to be like a blogger poses, here are more of my... natural reactions. The one above? I would call it some sort of cyclops, or maybe the winking while growling hunchback?

I'm back in LA now, but I took these photos yesterday-- aka my last day in Jersey. As you can see, I am NOT donning a winter coat (hallelujah) cause it almost hit 60 degrees. While I switched my heavy coat for something lighter, there were a handful of girls sporting some denim cut offs and/ or flip-flop?! What?! Oh, east coast, you can be so silly sometimes. (I say this as if I didn't try to convince my mom to let me do the same thing in middle school...)

update: apparently I'm not the only one who makes silly faces

THESE SHOES ARE SO BLISTER CITY. I can't even. There is a reason I never ever wear them.

I don't even know what my face is.

And behold, the traditional try hard faces that I usually sport
